Green Source Magazine,6 issues-BiMonthly A check of GreenSource’s masthead reveals something that might seem strange at first glance. Some are from BuildingGreen, Inc., others from Architectural Record, while others are from McGraw-Hill Construction, of which Record is a part. How does that work? And, what is Shostak Studios? Well, GreenSource is made in a collaborative process that is similar to a well-designed sustainable building. They are separate companies that meet frequently to collaborate and create our magazine and its Web site. BuildingGreen has nearly two decades of experience publishing such vehicles as Environmental Building News and the GreenSpec Directory. The McGraw-Hill Construction team has the active participation of five of Architectural Record’s editors. Between them, they have decades of experience as practitioners in the fields of architecture and engineering, not to mention publishing. They are all backed by McGraw-Hill’s sales and production staff. The extremely talented people from New York-based Shostak Studios gives each issue its distinctive graphic look, laying out the articles and refining their original design concept. Although BuildingGreen is located in Vermont and Record is in New York, in 2007 they will meet face to face at least five times to evaluate projects, lay out articles, and debate where GreenSource is going next. That doesn’t sound like much, but they communicate frequently through dozens of phone calls, hundreds of emails, and many versions of each article fly back and forth among all of them each time we publish. Like successful building-design teams, they trust and respect one another. They share a willingness to try new things, ambitions to improve what they make, and a desire to please our readers—our clients, if you will. It seems to work. Last year, Folio: magazine gave GreenSource awards for editorial content and design, and the magazine has won a Neal Gold Award from American Business Media for best startup magazine.
